Marios

Thanks for your comment, I have two saunas, one at home and one in my summer cottage home, but they have turned into storage areas. Your comment gives me a good impetus to clean them out and start using them again. As you probably know, there is an American Indian tradition of sweat lodges. I have done sweat lodges a few times and felt wonderful afterwards. No doubt the result of floods of heat shock proteins.

Have you seen my blog entry HSP70 to the rescue at http://anti-agingfirewalls.com/2010/07/03/hsp70-to-the-rescue/

Just seen this entry and would like to confirm that sauna can induce hormesis (same basis as exposing experimental flies to high temeratures). This has not yet been studied scientifically in humans, although private manufacturers of sauna products have offered funding for a clinical trial

Hi Jayne

What interesting questions! To start out with, yes, I think a sauna could trigger heat shock proteins. That is why native american "sweat lodges" could possibly be beneficial as claimed by those who regularly go through such rituals. Having gone through a few sweat lodge rituals myself, I can affirm they are indeed stressful. Although I own a sauna, taking regular saunas is not part of my personal anti-aging program, however. I had never thought of them in terms of hormesis, though there could be something there. Thanks for pointing this out.

And indeed there appears to be some literature that sweating might be a good way to rid the body of heavy metals (See http://www.usfreeads.com/322637-cls.html for example.) I suspect the sweating is what your doctor had in mind re getting rid of the heavy metals rather tham the heat shock proteins. Personally I have relied on some supplements like l-carnosine for heavy metal detoxification.

Dear Vince
I would dearly love to know if using my sauna would trigger these heat shock proteins. My doctor tested me for heavy metals and found I had really high mercury levels. She prescribed Far Infra Red Sauna for this. I am intrigued whether the Repeated Mild Heat Stress is achieved through exercise alone or whether regular sauna treatments should become part of the anti aging programme?
