Wonderful goods from you, man. I've understand your stuff previous to and you're just extremely fantastic. I really like what you have acquired here, really like what you are stating and the way in which you say it. You make it entertaining and you still care for to keep it wise. I can't wait to read far more from you. This is really a wonderful website.

Great article. Thanks a great deal for the breakdown you've granted here. I am just still sort-of an illiterate with this topic. So this article was really helpful to myself. My husband just introduced his own ebook in this region and I think some things I actually learned from your post would enable us to give him the required support. Thanks!

Matthew,
While I agree with you about the importance of knowing our genes and what they tell us for medicine, I think the equivalent of the tricoder will have to take not only our genes and gene variations into acount but also the states of our epigenomes, changes in the DNA and histones that are tissue-specific and acquired during life and even inherited. What I am saying is that after each of us gets his or her genome completely sequenced and all gene variations cataloged, that will not be enough to characterize our states for protection against or cure of all diseases. We will also have to get our epigenomic markers cataloged - DNA methylation and histone acetylation profiles to start with, and that is an immense and tissue-specific job. Moreover, these epigenetic markers change with time. So, as we move forward we will get more and more "magical" cures. In fact, we already have a lot of such cures from the viewpoint of a century ago. But it will be a long long time before we can aim a tricoder and cure almost anything. Like you, I am optimistic that we can and willkeep going.

The future of medicine lies squarely in one's own genetic code. Imagine the effectiveness of any medication that was designed with your specific DNA and RNA coding in mind. Unintended consequences would be rare. Most side effects could be controlled simply by switching off various genes or receptors. Indeed, as Arthur C. Clark put it "sufficiently advanced technology will be indistinguishable from magic." Tri-corders anyone?
